Essay Prompts for the 2018-19 Common and Coalition Applications

Attention Class of 2019! The Common Application and the Coalition Application have announced that their 2018-19 application prompts will remain the same! Rising seniors should get a head start on their personal essay ASAP by starting the brainstorming process.

Arete Tip: The most taxing part of a personal statement is framing your story! It’s helpful to work through two or three prompts and get as many ideas on paper as possible. This exercise is crucial for brainstorming the most innovative idea for your final essay. All of this work won’t go to waste—the essays you don’t use for your personal statement can be adapted to answer supplements!

Summer Tips for Rising Seniors

If you didn’t get that summer internship or weren’t accepted to a coveted abroad program, don’t dwell! Summer’s a great time to build your résumé or work on your college application. There’s never an excuse to do nothing! Put up flyers to babysit; send an email to your parents’ friends who have children looking for tutors; volunteer at a local soup kitchen; sell lemonade and give your profits to a local charity; gather used sports equipment to donate to your local public school—stay positive, productive, and involved in your community.

MBA Applicants: Round One Deadlines Are Just Around the Corner

MBA applicants can apply to business school during any one of three rounds. However, Aretecounselors highlyrecommend applicants submit by Round One.

In Round One, the admissions committee is eagerly looking for the best candidates to build their next class. Applying early shows MBA admissions teams that you are committed to earning your MBA, well prepared and organized, and dedicated to attending their school. Round One decisions are released fairly early, so if you happen to get rejected by your top choice school, you will have ample time to complete applications for later rounds. Be proactive and use the summer to ensure your B-School application is in top shape by September deadlines.

Round One Applicants, consider using this timeline as your guide this summer:

Arete Tip:Check to see if the MBA programs to which you are applying have a binding early decision program. If you plan to send out several applications and compare acceptances and scholarship offers, avoid applying to schools that require a commitment upon acceptance.
